PeaceQuilts

PeaceQuilts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, establishing and supporting independent, self-managed sewing cooperatives in Haiti.  The women produce one-of-a-kind art quilts, as well as a collection of affordable products, reflecting Haiti's rich artistic and cultural heritage.  PeaceQuilts provides an opportunity for Haitian women to build their own businesses and earn a living wage.

PeaceQuilts is made up almost entirely of volunteers.  These volunteers have contributed countless hours of their time and generously shared their talents, often organizing and working at PeaceQuilts events and sales, and even traveling to Haiti at their own expense to work directly with the women.

Art Matenwa

DIFFICULT TO GET TO, AND RELATIVELY UNKNOWN EVEN IN HAITI, MATÈNWA HAS LITTLE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD. IT IS A COMMUNITY FACING CHALLENGES, MUCH LIKE OTHER TOWNS IN HAITI, AND CHOOSING TO ADDRESS AND SOLVE THEM IN UNIQUE, CREATIVE WAYS.

THE HOPE WAS TO TEACH AN INCOME-GENERATING SKILL THAT INCLUDED THE DELIGHT OF ARTISTIC ACCOMPLISHMENT, ALL WITHOUT USING UP LIMITED NATURAL RESOURCES LIKE WOOD AND WATER THAT WOULD ROCK AN ALREADY FRAGILE ECOLOGICAL BALANCE.
